Los Boyz & Friends came back from a 2-0 deficit against Carlos Espina & Friends on July 17 at Shell Energy Stadium, tying the match at 2-2 before ultimately winning on penalties. The first Creators for a Cause match brought together content creators and the Houston community, along with raising money for charity through the Espina Project.
The match featured Carlos Espina & Friends taking on Los Boyz & Friends, with the winning team getting to select the charity that would benefit from the fundraiser. Along with giving fans an opportunity to watch their favorite creators compete, the event allowed them to contribute to a charitable cause.
Carlos Espina & Friends got off to a strong start, with Vicente Ochoa scoring from outside the penalty area to give his team a 1-0 lead. Ochoa placed his shot toward the far post, putting Carlos Espina’s team ahead early.
Carlos Espina also helped create their second goal, sending a pass into the box for Lataflo, who finished with a low shot to extend the lead to 2-0. With a two-goal advantage, Carlos Espina & Friends were in a strong position to come away with the win.
However, Los Boyz started getting back into the match through Baby Mathew, who scored inside the box to make it 2-1. The goal gave Los Boyz a chance to recover, with Carlos Espina’s team now needing to protect a one-goal lead.
Los Boyz eventually tied the match through JZ Garcia, with Gero sending a pass across the goal for Garcia to tap in and make it 2-2. After giving up the first two goals, Los Boyz had answered with two of their own, sending the match into a penalty shootout.
Both teams now had to finish their chances from the penalty spot, with Josey ultimately converting the deciding penalty to secure the victory for Los Boyz & Friends. Carlos Espina’s team had the better start, however Los Boyz were able to work their way back into the match and finish the comeback.
Along with the competition, Carlos Espina and the Espina Project used the event to bring creators and fans together in support of charity. The match gave those involved an opportunity to use their platforms to contribute to the Houston community.
I believe Los Boyz’s ability to respond after going down 2-0 was the biggest difference in the match. Baby Mathew’s goal gave them an opening, along with Gero and JZ Garcia combining for the equalizer before Josey converted the winning penalty. Carlos Espina & Friends took control early, however Los Boyz ultimately made the most of their opportunities and came away with the win.
