Texas and Texas State will open the 2026 season Saturday at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. CT on ESPN. Both teams enter their season opener with talented newcomers who could make an immediate impact.
For Texas, former Auburn wide receiver Cam Coleman gives quarterback Arch Manning a proven outside target. Coleman recorded 1,306 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns across two seasons at Auburn. His size, athleticism, and ability to win big-time contested catches should add another dimension to the Longhorns’ passing game. Former Pittsburgh linebacker Rasheem Biles brings experience to the Texas defense. Biles finished last season with 101 tackles, 17 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, and two interceptions returned for touchdowns. His ability to defend the run, pressure the quarterback, and play in coverage will be important against Texas State’s fast-paced offense.
The Bobcats have newcomers of their own to watch. Arizona State transfer Zechariah Sample joins an experienced receiving group led by Beau Sparks and Chris Dawn Jr. Sample can contribute as a receiver and punt returner, giving quarterback Brad Jackson another explosive option. Freshman La’Keyleon Graves may be Texas State’s most interesting newcomer. The former Kilgore standout played on both sides of the ball in high school and brings good size at 6-foot-2 and 200 pounds. He is listed as a receiver, but his two-way background gives the Bobcats flexibility to use him on the defensive side of the ball.
Texas State’s best chance will be creating explosive plays through Jackson and its deep receiving group. The Bobcats have enough offensive talent to test a Texas defense by breaking in several new pieces.
Texas, however, has the advantage in size, depth, and overall talent. Coleman should quickly become involved in the offense, while Biles and the Longhorns’ defensive front make it difficult for Jackson to extend drives. Texas State may create a few opportunities, but consistently finishing those drives will be the challenge.
Expect the newcomers on both teams to make an impression, but Texas should take control early and open the season with a comfortable home win.
