In a highly anticipated matchup, the No. 2 Texas Longhorns fell to the No. 1 Nebraska Cornhuskers in a straight-set sweep (19-25, 19-25, 16-25) to close out the opening weekend of the collegiate volleyball season at the Players Era Showcase.
The matchup at T-Mobile Arena marked the first regular-season meeting between these two perennial powerhouses since 2016. It also served as a rematch of the 2023 National Championship game. This time, however, it was the Cornhuskers who dictated the pace from start to finish.
Texas struggled to find its offensive rhythm against a disciplined Nebraska block. The Longhorns were held to a .152 hitting percentage on the night, hampered by 19 hitting errors.
Freshman standout Cari Spears was a bright spot for the Longhorns. She pacing the offense with a team-high 12 kills. Despite her aggressive swings, Texas was unable to string together the continuous scoring runs needed to put pressure on the top-ranked Cornhuskers.
Nebraska’s front row proved to be the difference-maker. Andi Jackson anchored the Cornhuskers ' offense with 9 kills on an incredibly efficient .571 hitting percentage, while also adding two blocks.
Defensively, Manaia Ogbechie terrorized the Longhorns at the net. She collected a game-high 7 blocks to go along with her 7 kills. Under the direction of setter Bergen Reilly, Nebraska hit a blistering .293 as a team, consistently finding gaps in the Texas floor defense. With the loss, Texas drops to 2-2 on the early season. Meanwhile, Nebraska improves to 2-0 and firmly cements its hold on the nation's top ranking.
The Longhorns will look to clean up their unforced errors and bounce back as they return to Austin to prepare for the grueling stretch of the non-conference schedule.
